As far as AKC breeds go, two interesting ones that come to mind are the Curly Coated Retreiver and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The NSDTR (sorry- didn't feel like typing that out again) is a recent addition to the AKC rolls. Perhaps the Portuguese Water Dog might fit the bill as well. If you're in an area that has a lot of bird hunting, perhaps there is a breed or derivation of a breed that has been bred specifically for the area? Sort of like how the Catahoula Leopard Dog became THE dog for hunting in Louisiana. I hope this helps a bit... there are SO many rare breeds out there, your best bet may be to sit down with one of those massive breed encyclopedias. There are probably some "Old World" dogs in Europe also bred for the purpose that you're looking for, but I am not familiar with that side of the pond.
