Thanks Dani! Actually, the Boston Terrier is one of my husband's favorite breeds right now :) Thanks also for the tip to not get a dog from an ad in the paper.

To be honest, we'd be most likely to get a mixed breed, although rescues really appeal to me. Thanks for the link too.

:My suggestion would be a Boston terrier (and it's not just because i have one!) i live in a one bedroom upstairs apartment and my Boston gets along great. She's small enough to be exercised in the house, and although she loves going to the park, we can skip a few weeks and she's fine. While they aren't the smartest dog i can think of, they are pretty easily trained and are "foolproof" for the most part. My girl is very obedient, as i have worked with her since i brought her home. They get along great with kids and other dogs(at least most do.) And they can be left alone (in a crate for a puppy) while you are at work and adjust fairly well. The only thing you have to beware of is the heat and the cold. With their snub noses they can overheat, and since they are small with short coats, they get cold easily. They can be sort of hyper as puppies, but older dogs are wonderful and can get by with a moderate walk in the evenings.

:This is strange, because i usually don't recommend my breeds! But your description fits a Boston terrier to a T! i do work with rescue, and if you check out Nationwide Boston terrier rescue on the Petfinder.com website (a linked the website below) there might be a rescue contact in your area. Whether you decide to rescue or get a puppy, please don't buy from a pet store or an ad in the newspaper. You can do a search on the web for a local breed club and get a list of breeders from there.

:Also, you could look into the French bulldog, although they are more rare and could be difficult to find. Good luck!

::We'd like a small to medium dog, no bigger than 30 pounds. We don't have a yard. Because of that, we know he has to be pretty low energy. We'd like an intelligent, fairly obedient dog, but we probably aren't likely to go to obedience classes.

::We'd be willing to get a rescue dog. I don't want a dog much older than 1 year old, because we'd like to influence his personality.

::We really want a dog as a companion and family member. Someday we'll have kids, and its important that our dog likes and can adjust to kids. It's also important that our dog get along with other dogs, because if we ever go on vacation, he'll likely stay with my parents who have two dogs.

::I'm really interested in what kind of dogs people in our situation (small home, jobs, etc) have, and how the dogs get along in those situations.

::Thanks!
