Searching for the perfect jogging partner

I am reasearching breeds to help determine which would be the best fit for me and my lifestyle. One of the major things I am looking for in my future companion is a daily jogging partner. I would like to ask some questions of any runners that take their dog with them on their runs. (Please note: I know there are many other factors to consider when deciding on a breed. But these questions will help me make my overall decision.)

Some things that I have heard - any truth to them?:
- that medium to large size dogs would be best
- that long coated breeds may get overheated
- that short coated breeds are not good at running outdoors in cold weather(I do live in Minnesota)
- that protective breeds are ideal

I am single and live alone, not to mention the fact that I love to go running at night. A protective breed would make me feel safer. I had originally focused on breeds that would be protective, or at least look like they would be.

Also, I have been told that females are better than males for jogging partners. Something about wanting to stop at each fire hydrant! Any runners out there with male dogs? What do you think?

Could I take a dog on long runs? My daily runs are usually 5 miles. But I like to do longer ones during nicer weather. I know we would have to work up to it - just as a new running human would have to. What kind of distances do runners take their dogs on?

Finally, not a running question, but related. I love to go rollerblading and biking These are usually faster paced than running. Still ok for a dog? Can obedience training help me learn to control the dog so I don't lose balance, etc?

Any ideas, experience, suggestions would all be appreciated!

Thanks,

Jen
