Actually, I believe they did have a name for that dog: the Tesem. There's a book written by a Maltese professor, Cecil Camilari (sp?), about the "Maltese Kelb-Tal Fenek" (Pharaoh Hound) that traces the history of dogs back through the Tesem in Egypt, which is presumed to have come from central Africa. Probably, today's sighthounds can all trace their ancestry to this Tesem dog, which is depicted in the oldest Egyptian drawings.
But "GASP" is just too good to pass up. :-)
