:Thanks, Kathy...as always, you bring up good points. Our priority is to train Beau for service, so we will stick to that for now.

Hi Gracie,
I can only share this in lighgt of what Kathy said. Sassy was first trained as a therapy dog. I wanted to do that work with her. It was only in the last 6 months that it has become important to train her as an Assistance Dog.
The phrase..."Sassy you are my date" has been used by me more than once. That has been the biggest challenge that we have had, she likes people. In our case we simply now give Sassy the command "work" and put the vest on change her collar & lead (because they have to match.....it is a Linda thing) and we are then good to go. But had I not been working with the best trainer in the world, I may not have known how it "fix" it. Pat (my trainer) said it would be an easy "fix" and she was right. So yes because I have experienced what Kathy speaks of I would have to agree, train for service/assistance first. Then if you still want to try/consider therapy work.
Peace,
Linda
