Get stuff off the counter. It's totally a self rewarding behavior. He is a hound, and sometimes I think "hound" means "thief" in some ancient and obscure language. I wish I had some better advice for you than to just make sure there's nothing up there that could be dangerous, keep on your guard, and learn to laugh if he slips one by you. Good luck.
